What is IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)?

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation is an advanced medical procedure in which the egg and sperm are made to fertilize and form an embryo outside the human body in a specialized, artificially created optimal environment. The matured embryo will then be transferred to woman’s uterus which increases the chances of pregnancy.

  • This procedure can be opted by those who’re aiming to overcome a range of fertility issues.
  • Women with blocked, damaged or removed Fallopian tubes, low productivity of eggs, uterine fibroid and premature ovarian failure can be candidates for IVF.
  • Men with lower sperm count or poor sperm motility.
  • Couple with unexplained infertility may also opt for the procedure.

The success rate of IVF is around 40% in each cycle, so in each cycle 4 out of 10 women get pregnant. It is found that the chances of getting pregnant tend to rise after the second or the third cycle. Women who undergo IVF have the chance of multiple pregnancies in some scenarios.

IVF Procedure

IVF Process
IVF commences with a preliminary consultation, counselling sessions, and a thorough examination which determines whether the couple are eligible to go for the treatment. The ovary is medically stimulated to have maximum number of eggs. The eggs are extracted and are fertilised using the partner’s or donor’s sperm in a test tube.

The fertilised egg or embryo is then grown in an optimal and protected environment and will take 3-5 days to develop properly which will then be transferred into the women’s uterus.
