A diagnostic laparoscopy is mostly used to investigate the presence of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, adhesions, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies and any other structural abnormalities. This process is among the few initial tests done to identify the reason of infertility in a woman and is done soon after her menstruation ends for the month.

Laparoscopy Procedure
DIAGNOSTIC LAPAROSCOPY
This is generally done on a day care basis, where the patient need not stay in the clinic for more than a few hours. The patient is given anaesthesia and a needle is inserted through her navel and the abdominal cavity is filled with carbon dioxide that inflates the abdominal walls and makes the organs clearly visible.
A laparoscope is inserted through an incision in the navel. A small probe is inserted through another incision around the pelvic area that helps the doctor have a better view of the reproductive organs like the fallopian tube, uterus, ovaries etc. Often a blue coloured solution is injected to know whether the fallopian tubes are open or not.
OPERATIVE LAPAROSCOPY
The diagnostic laparoscopy can turn into operative laparoscopy if some abnormalities are visible during the examination. This process is done to remove ovarian cysts, adhesions around the fallopian tubes and ovaries, open the blocked tubes, treat ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis and even remove uterine fibroids in some cases. It can be a part of hysterectomy to remove diseased ovaries.
What to Expect?
Laparoscopy does not entail any major risks or complications during and after the procedure. There are only certain temporary discomforts that patients may experience that include tenderness in the navel area, distended abdomen and discomfort in shoulders, chest or abdomen due to the use of the gas, and nausea due to the use of anaesthesia. However, they are very minimal and will go away soon after the procedure.
