This is an advanced technique, often done in addition to IVF or ICSI treatment, that involves thinning the outer wall of the embryo (zona pellucida) to improve the chances of implantation. This treatment is recommended in such cases when the thick outer shell of the egg is thought to be impeding the implantation process.
Assisted hatching is generally performed on the third day of embryo development. The embryologists use a laser to create a very small hole in the zona pellucida. Assisted hatching can also be done on previously frozen and thawed embryos.
Assisted hatching is not recommended for all patients, but may be helpful in women who are older (more than 37 years old) or who have had a prior IVF failure.

Using either one of these techniques will enable the shell to thin, facilitate the embryo to hatch out of it, and improve the chances of implantation in the uterus.
